Your Career Shouldnt Be That Hard
Your Career Shouldnt Be That Hard Your Career Shouldnt Be That Hard Your Career Shouldnt Be That Hard February 20, 2014 by Career Coach Sherri Thomas Leave a Comment Nothing is worse than feeling helpless in your career. Helpless. Hopeless. Stuck. The notion that you donât have any career options is a myth. Every day you are making choices. Every day you make the choice to work for the company where you are. You make the choice to work for the boss you have. You make the choice to work on the projects you drive. Every day youâre making decisions about your career. So what can you do if you dislike your company, manager or your job? Iâve been a leading career coach and author for the past 6 years (and working at a 6-figure job for a Fortune 100 Company for the past 14 years), and what I know for sure is that when my career is moving in the right direction its fun, exciting, challenging, scary (in a good way) and immensely rewarding. And when its moving in the wrong direction its excrutiatingly difficult. Thats when I know somethings gotta give. Its time for ME to make a few changes. Below is a simple a step-by-step process and that even with the small changes can help you find your career flow 1. Know what you want. Whatâs pulling you toward your career right now? Whatâs pushing you away? The first step in getting un-stuck is to sort through the logic and emotion of everything going on in your job right now and make a list of what all the positive things are that youâre getting in your job, such as a salary, benefits, doing purposeful work, working for a company you love, working for a manager you respect, being in an environment where you can constantly learn new things, etc. Now make a list of things you dislike about your job such as little or no career advancement, limited visibility with leaders, feeling unvalued or unappreciated, being under-challenged, etc. Look at both lists. Are they out of balance? Is there anything you can change on your âdislikeâ list? Many times itâs difficult for us to come up with solutions on our own so try brainstorming possibilities with a few people you trust such as a mentor, manager, department managers or colleagues. Whatâs in your control that you could change? How could change it? Who could help you? 2. Shake things up internally. If you like your job, but just wish one or two things would change â" then see if you can make it happen. There may be some parts of your job that you enjoy, and parts that you donât. Identify what those are and then have a heart to heart talk with your manager. Try saying something like, âI am really enjoying my job, but there are a few things Iâd like to see if we could change.â I once said to one of my managers something like, âIâm really not sure how much value Iâm adding to the research project, but if you gave me those 4 hours each week, I would use them to create a new leadership initiative.â I then went on to explain the new initiative and how it would benefit me, the department and my manager. Ten minutes later he told me to, âGo for it!â Another time I asked one of my managerâs if he needed any help with the budget and told him that I wanted to learn about managing the departmentâs finances. He gave me more financial responsibility and taught me everything I wanted to know! Other great sources to help you shake things up internally could be your boss manager, other department managers and anyone who has, or has had, a responsibility that you would like to have. Two key things to remember are a. You are the only one who can make a change happen. b. You cannot make a change by yourself â" you need the support, wisdom and mentorship of others. 3. If you canât get what you want internally â" go external. Sometimes our career requires big bold changes. If youâre unhappy in your job and you canât get what you want inside your current organization, then itâs time to explore external opportunities. The first step is to simply start exploring possibilities. Talk to others who are in the industry or job role that interests you. Ask them what a good day looks like, what a bad day looks like, if they have any special training or education, and how they got their job. You can learn a lot about different career options simply by talking to others. After you identify a job role that you are really interested in, the next step is to start exploring job openings. Let your network know that you are ready to take the next step in your career and ask if they could send you any job leads, referrals or recommendations. Also, search the job boards on company websites where you want to work. Be sure to set up Job Agents on Glassdoor.com and Indeed.com so that youâll receive weekly job openings in your e-mail box. Whether you make a few small changes in your career or one big bold change, you owe it to yourself to have a career that lets you do meaningful, purposeful work and makes you feel valued, appreciated and energized. You really do have control over your career â" you just have to get in the driverâs seat and make it happen! ?? â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"â"- Sherri Thomas is a Career Strategist. Could a Temporary Position Really Lead to Full-Time Work
Could a Temporary Position Really Lead to Full-Time Work Holding a temporary job is nothing to be ashamed of, whether itâs an entry level or executive level position. Many people who have trouble finding work turn to staffing agencies to help place them in temporary positions. However, if you play your cards right, a temp job could be permanent before you know it. The reality is some companies may not be in a good position financially to hire a permanent employee, but they might be in a better position several months or a year down the road. Here are some of the benefits of a temporary job and how they might lead to full-time work. You Gain Valuable Experience When you are a temporary employee, you not only gain experience, but also the specific experience for the company youâre working for. Once you have a few months of experience under your belt, you can consider hiring the best resume writing service to brush up your resume. Itâs possible youâll be interviewed for a full-time position at your temp job. At the least, youâll have valuable experience to add to your resume. Donât Act Like a Temporary Employee The biggest mistake temps make is acting like they are only going to be at the job for a few months. Instead, show interest in the company and the work youâre doing and get involved as much as you can. If you act like youâre a full-time employee, it will make more sense for the company to bring you on full-time when theyâre able to. Once youâre ready, a cover letter writing service can help you make sure you look as good on paper as you do in person from a professional standpoint. Network as Much as Possible Networking is especially beneficial if you want your temporary executive job to become permanent. With the help of an executive resume writer, you can craft the perfect resume to hand out to the right people once you get acquainted with the company youâre working for. Depending on the size of the organization, you can talk to people from different departments to get your name out there. You may not be interested in the work other departments do, but you never know who you will meet in the process. Do More Than Whatâs Asked Being a temporary employee is tough because you donât want to overstep your boundaries. However, thereâs nothing wrong with going above and beyond the work youâre supposed to do. Being engaged with your work and asking questions about systems and processes will show you care about the job and will likely give you consideration when the company is looking for a full-time employee. The best resume writing service can only help you if you have the experience to back it up.

Best Advice Entrepreneur Nanxi Liu of Enplug
Best Advice Entrepreneur Nanxi Liu of Enplug Nanxi Liu is co-founder and CEO of Enplug, which develops the software that powers digital displays in stadiums, restaurants, stores, and offices. Launched three years ago, today Enplug counts among its clients Fortune 500 companies and small businesses worldwide, who use its technology to display real-time news, interactive social media feeds, videos, and more. The companyâs rapid growthâ"revenue projections for 2015 are in the millionsâ"earned Liu a coveted spot on Inc. magazineâs 30 Under 30 list of up-and-coming entrepreneurs. Liu, who previously founded the award-winning Nanoly Bioscience, is also a pianist, an activity that has been, well, instrumental in her success in business, as she describes below. Q: Whatâs the best piece of advice you ever got? A: âThe best way is paving your own way.â I learned this from my piano teacher, Martha Albrecht, in middle school. Whenever I learned a new piano piece, weâd listen to professional pianistsâ versions of the song. Then Martha would guide me through the music measure by measure and have me mark it up with my own interpretation. I approached Enplug the same way. When building a business, we can either copy another business or write our own DNA. Doing things our own way extends beyond how we build product; itâs also how we create culture, hire, and get funding. We broke most âstartup rulesâ right from the beginning. Enplug started with five co-founders, all strangers. We lived and worked out of a house with 13 teammates in our first year. We moved to Los Angeles to build a tech company. This may seem like the beginning of a disaster, but it was perfect recipe for us. When we set out to build the best software for digital displays, we ignored our competitorsâ product because we didnât want to be tainted with old ways of doing things. We started from scratch, architecting a new operating system and app platform. When people see an Enplug-powered display in a stadium or store, they immediately recognize it as Enplug because itâs so unique. Q: What did you learn from your biggest mistake? A: Follow up immediately. My biggest mistakes have been from missed opportunities because I took too much time to follow up. After meeting someone cool, I email them within 12 hours. Theyâre more likely to remember me and still have some excitement from our conversation. I find that if I wait more than a day to contact the person after the first meeting, there is a drop in response rate. This concept applies to subsequent follow-ups as well. Whenever I or my sales team have a customer call, we always follow up that same day with next steps. It demonstrates to the customer that you prioritize them and sets the expectation that you like to move quickly. The customer will also respond quickly when you do. Q: What piece of advice would you pass on to other aspiring female entrepreneurs? A: We must hold ourselves to a higher standard than our male peers. The cards are stacked against us so we have to work harder, achieve better metrics, and build a stronger team to be respected. When I go into a meeting with investors, I know that I have probably have 50% less time than my male counterpart to make a positive impression. As a result, Iâve precisely planned each word in my pitch. I know Enplugâs sales numbers, customers, software, product roadmap, and teammates like the back of my hand. Always walk into a meeting being the most prepared. Nanxi Liu is a member of Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the worldâs most promising young entrepreneurs, which has partnered with MONEY.com to help produce this series.

Holiday Overload Steps for Balancing Work and Life
Holiday Overload Steps for Balancing Work and Life Holiday Overload Steps for Balancing Work and LifeAre the holiday festivities disrupting yur work schedule?Do you feel like your work and personal life are competing for attention? If so, youre in the same boat as many professionals facing hectic holiday schedules this year. The weeks from November to January make up some of the happiest times of the year, but they are also some of the most stressful. With holiday stress comes the difficult task of balancing work and life. Many professionals struggle with managing their work and personal lives, which leads to competing priorities and added stress. If you are facing holiday overload, here are a few steps to help you achieve that balance.Prioritize your work and personal activities. The holiday season tends to get busy we all want to enjoy the parties, choir recitals, and gift exchanges, but we still have our regular responsibilities. Sometimes it seems that there just isnt enough time to fit everything into our schedules. In order to achieve a healthy work-life balance particularly during the holiday months you have to prioritize.Start by making a list of your work and personal activities. Obviously, work projects due during the holiday season should be at the top of your list employers wouldnt be pleased if you prioritize the organization of your family holiday party over an important work deadline. Once youve listed all the must do work assignments, departure focusing on your activities outside of the office. This is where the juggle between family, festivities, and other holiday-related tasks begins. List those events and activities in order of importance to you.Plan how you can use your time, and use it well. Now that youve prioritized your responsibilities, the next step is to determine how you will use your time. When your plate is overflowing, its important that you figure out how to navigate your schedule and use your time as efficiently as possible. Pr epare for this by auditing your weekly activities. Take one week to log all of your activities and the time you spent on each one. While you dont have to keep track of each and every little task, its important that you record the way you use your time and group it according to your work, projects, errands, etc. The point is to determine your weekly requirements and find the extra time you can spend on holiday events like parties and shopping.Take a look at these activities as well. Are there areas you can speed up? Can you enlist the help of a friend or family member for errands or shopping? Maybe you can consolidate some responsibilities one week to make more room in the next. Look for the activities that are time hogs and see what you can do to speed them along, creating more time to spend on the holidays. One way you can likely find more time is to eliminate, or at least lessen, your use of social media and digital communications. Checking email, sending texts, and updating your F acebook profile eat up large chunks of your time, and they may not necessarily be priorities. Its understandable that you cannot step away from technology altogether, but setting some limits will help you make sure that you dont end up wasting too much time. Limit social media posts to right before bedtime, and decide when in the night you will stop checking your work email explain to your co-workers that you wont check or respond to emails after hours.Another great way to save time is to do your holiday shopping online. Driving to the mall, looking for a parking space, shopping, and standing in long lines all take up valuable holiday time. Consider purchasing your gifts online. Not only does online shopping save time, but it also reduces stress, can cost less, and often guarantees that product will be in stock. Many retailers offer deep discounts online during the holidays as well, starting with Cyber Monday and lasting until mid-January, so take advantage of this opportunity to c heck off some holiday chores without taking too much time.Related8 Steps to Achieving Work-Life BalanceCreate a schedule and stick to it.Once youve determined what your priorities are and how much time you have available each week, start scheduling your holiday hours. This is key to balancing work and life during the holidays. Using a day planner, smartphone, wall calendar, or whatever appointment reminder tools you prefer, insert your working hours and off hours like when you eat meals and go to bed. If you have important work projects due, include those next. These make up your must do list highlight them so you know they wont change.Next, go through your list of priorities and start scheduling the items that have set, unchangeable dates. For example, if you plan to attend an office volunteer event on November 23, schedule it first. Save items like shopping and baking for last, since they are more flexible. Of course, dont forget to consider what activities you want to share with family, as that can affect how you should schedule them. After all, you wouldnt want to plan to write greeting cards with your 7-year-old at 10 oclock at night.Create boundaries between work time and personal time. This is easier said than done, but having a healthy balance between work and life requires separating the two. Start by setting limits on the time spent on work. You have the mandated hours set by your employer, sure, but working overtime or taking work home is not healthy during the holidays. So make sure you use your time at work efficiently so you can complete everything you need to do.Once youve set your holiday work hours, stick to the plan. That means that while youre at work, use the time exclusively for work-related projects, meetings, etc. Dont bring your holiday to-do list or personal activities into the office, and keep your mind focused on the tasks at hand. If you plan your day wisely, you should be able to complete all of your goals for the workday.By the sam e token, avoid bringing your work home with you. Once you leave the office, leave the office behind you. Dont check your email, reply to messages, or log in to your account. Ask your team members to respect your time with family and friends and explain to them you will not be available after hours until the holidays are over.Dont forget to focus on you.The main benefit from a healthy approach to balancing work and life is reduced stress and more me time. Holiday activities may seem fun, but if you neglect yourself in favor of them you could end up burning out. Try to schedule one hour each day just for you use this time to read a book at your local coffee shop, go to the spa for a facial, get a massage while shopping at the mall, or just relax in the park. Finally, take the time to exercise during the holidays. Many professionals end up neglecting their normal exercise routine during the winter months because of hectic schedules or unpleasant weather. Dont let that stop you. If you cant make it to the gym, find ways to add some extra steps to your day park further from the door, use the stairs, send your documents to the furthest printer, or even spend a few minutes walking around the office to say hello to co-workers. Adding those extra steps will increase your energy and help support you in the long holiday season.Click on the following link for more advice on finding work-life balance.Make sure your resume is ready for the holidays with a free resume critique.Recommended ReadingThe Holiday Hiring Freeze Fact or Fiction? How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Jeopardizing Your JobWorkplace Wellness Make Your Office Life HealthierRelated Articles
